[solved]-Pleasure Knowing Gentleman Led Ibm S Expansion Asian Markets 60 70 S Many Stories Share On Q39726614
I have had the pleasure of knowing the gentleman who led IBM’sexpansion into the Asian markets in the 60-70’s. He had manystories to share, one of which was a total PR nightmare. IBM wasthe industry leader in the development of banking ATM’s. Afterhaving much success in America and Europe, IBM recognized thegolden opportunity to introduce this form of banking to Asia. Thiswas a multi-year process of selecting the premier location for thefirst installation of an ATM. A high-profile project team wasassembled including design, engineering, technical, marketing andsales members. Based on the team’s research and recommendations, modifications were made and things moved along with muchanticipation. Finally, the unveiling of the first ATM date was setfor a huge celebration with political dignitaries and corporateexecutives invited to attend. The installation crew prepped thesite in an existing building and the machine was put in placed withmuch anticipation…..
The ATM fit perfectly except the machine was 6 inches too deepfor the space!!!! Oops….as the President of The Asian Markets waspreparing to fly in for the festivities, he receives THE phonecall. Can you imagine, IBM with all of its engineering might andknow-how failed to measure the standard wall thickness in thiscountry. Apparently, no one consulted the building codes or thebuilding’s blueprints!?!??! How insane is that? It is all toocommon for American companies to make assumptions of what holdstrue for our country is the same elsewhere(ethnocentrism). I would like for you to research andshare other examples….some are quite humorous! Explain (1-2paragraphs) in a post what assumption(s) the company made and whatwent wrong .
