Issues facing the organization

Modern healthcare organizations face considerable challenges, which undermine their ability to meet the emerging health needs in the population. Some of the emerging healthcare challenges include the need to deliver evidence based care at affordable costs and changing healthcare needs of the population because of increasing prevalence of chronic disorders and a high population of older population. Moreover, healthcare professionals are at increased pressure to learn and integrate modern technologies such as information technology and genetic engineering in their practice, to enhance efficiency and patient outcomes. Currently, our organization is facing two main challenges, namely shortage of nurses and case managers and secondly, poor job satisfaction levels, resulting to high rate of staff turnover. This proposal examines the effects poor job satisfaction and nurse shortage in the department and how improved communication and collaboration could enhance the existing working conditions.

Impact of nurse and case managers’ shortage in the department

The impacts of nurse and case manager’s shortage include; increased workload among the existing healthcare professionals, increased rates of medical errors, low patient satisfaction levels, and increasing costs of providing healthcare services in the department. Due to the prevailing shortage of nurses and case managers, the existing healthcare professionals are compelled to serve a higher number of patients, thereby increasing their workload. The increased workload results to various implications on the staff, including increasing their stress levels, excessive fatigue and increased absenteeism (Seo & Spetz, 2014). Moreover, heavy workload is associated with increased levels of various disorders, including depression, anxiety, poor appetite, obesity and substance and alcohol abuse. The second impact of nurse shortage is increased prevalence of medical errors, particularly during prescription of medications and in various caring processes. Increased medical errors arise from various factors, which include fatigue which undermines the ability of nurses to make sound judgments. Moreover, filling the vacant positions with temporary nurses increases the incidents of medical errors, resulting to other adverse outcomes, including patient injuries, reduced patient satisfaction with the services provided in the healthcare organization and increased costs of healthcare, due to increased length of hospital stay and paying damages to the injured clients (Seo & Spetz, 2014).

Impact of Poor job satisfaction

Job satisfaction is associated with the level of commitment that healthcare professionals demonstrate in the workplace (Panagiotis, Vassiliki, Petros, Velonakis, Danai & Panayota, 2015). Healthcare professionals with high job satisfaction levels report positive attitude towards their careers and are highly motivated to work in multidisciplinary teams to achieve the organizations objectives. One of the main impacts of poor job satisfaction among the healthcare professionals is poor staff retention, as a result of high turnover. Poor job satisfaction in healthcare organization set up is caused by various factors, which includes lack of nurse autonomy/independence, poor working relationships with coworkers and other healthcare professionals and lack of organizational support in promoting the wellbeing of the staff (Chien, & Yick, 2016). Other factors that cause poor job satisfaction among healthcare professionals in the workplace include heavy workload and inability to provide competent and high quality services to the patients.

Research also indicates that poor remuneration could be another factor that causes poor job satisfaction level. Apart from high turnover, poor job satisfaction is associated with increased stress levels among the affected employees. Low motivation among the employees is another impact of poor job satisfaction. The affected staff feels unrecognized and underappreciated, which makes them seek better career opportunities in other organizations. Poor job satisfaction is also associated with low productivity in delivery of quality healthcare services, because of the direct effects of low motivation and poor collaboration among healthcare professionals in multidisciplinary teams (Panagiotis, et al, 2015)

How improved communication, collaboration, and teamwork can improve conditions in your department

Improved communication can enhance conditions in the department by creating an open environment, which promotes sharing of information among the healthcare professionals. This could prevent and minimize errors during various nursing processes and during patient handovers in shifts. Improved collaboration and teamwork in the multidisciplinary teams could improve the quality of healthcare services delivered to patients. This is due to the fact that collaboration brings together people with diverse skills and knowledge, which enhance the patient outcomes in the respective teams.

Additionally, improved communication and teamwork could enhance productivity and promote creation of harmonious collaboration by creating effective methods of solving conflicts in the department. Effective conflict resolution mechanism promotes teamwork and a sense of belonging among all the healthcare professionals involved. Moreover, improved communication could enhance motivation among individual members in the department, resulting to an increase in productivity. Other benefits associated with improved team work and communication include increased patient satisfaction and reduced cost of healthcare, caused by limiting staff turnover and medical errors.
